Empowering Women to Sustain Their Lives

New Skills, Quality Recycled Jewelry Production, Food on the Table

We started this Womens Empowerment group in 2010 as an intitiate to provide support and income generating opportunities, for women living in KCC slums. All of the women were born in the slum and know first hand the challenges of supporting and bringing a family up in this environment.

The two main current objectives for this group are:

Provide a support network for women living in KCC slums where they can meet, discuss and help each other through lifes challenges.

Empower women through: income generation; business skills; product development and developing a new personal perspective that they can support their families through worthwhile and exciting projects.

Income Generation

The key focus of this group is to teach new skills in making unique products, such as jewelry production.

From the sales of the jewelry, the women receive money directly from the products they sell.

A small percentage is also invested back into the school and the final amount into operating costs of the group.

Essentially the jewelry is helping women to sustain their families by ensuring there is food on the table through the sales. But as well as this it is providing a sense of self worth and pride through making quality products that they sell.

About the beads

These beads are made from old recycled magazines and posters and are created from colour selection in the magazines. Once selected, the paper is cut into strips, rolled into tiny ball which then become beads. After this the beads are varnished and hung to dry for one week.

Here is the first stage of the process: Making the beads

Then the final product:
